TANAH LOT TEMPLE
WHAT IS TANAH LOT TEMPLE?
Tanah Lot temple is a temple located in the small island and surrounded by big wave sea water when it’s high tide. It’s a place to worship balinese sea god, Dewa Baruna or Bethara Segara.
The name ‘Tanah Lot’ means floating land in balinese language. It’s long natural process to be an island like today.The connected land (a cape) get erosion by sea wave for thousand years. It become big hole like you can see in the west of Tanah Lot. Then the junction crumbled and fall down. Then it looks like separated land, it looks like an island today.
*) There is a nice story about Tanah Lot history. Seems the history not make sense for me. That’s why i didn’t wrote here. But, i still respect it. You can check it in other blog or other website to find the history.

WHEN THE BEST TIME TO VISIT TANAH LOT TEMPLE?
BEST TIME TO VISIT:
- OPENING HOURS:
7.00 AM – 7.00 PM.
*) Better visit in early morning. It’s not much tourist & local people.
Monday – Friday.
*) It will be crowded if your visit on weekend or Indonesian holiday or in the same time of student visit.
- SUNSET TIME:
6.40 PM – 6.45 PM.
*) This temple also a nice place to watch sunset. The color gradation start on 6.15 PM.

*) Taking picture on Bali iconic place on sunset time is a combination of capturing beauty and good moment.
- BALI KECAK DANCE SHOW:
6.30 PM – 7.10 PM.
*) After you watch sunset at Tanah Lot better you watch Fire Kecak dance show. It’s nice show in the evening. Also the ticket price is not so expensive compare to Uluwatu Kecak dance show.
FIRE KECAK DANCE SHOW:
*) The Kecak dance show held everyday at Dewi Sinta restaurant. The entrance fee is IDR 50K per person.

*) You can see hindus people praying and the sequence of ceremony it self. Bali music can not be separated with the ceremony. Awesome ceremony & culture!

About 21 km northwest of Denpasar or 1 hour.
About 33 km southwest of Ubud or 1 hour and 15 minutes.
About 23 km northwest of Kuta beach or 1 hours.
About 26 km northwest of Ngurah Rai airport or 1 hour.

HOW TO GET TO TANAH LOT TEMPLE?
There is no direct public transport to get there.
*) For backpacker i recommend you to rent a scooter to reach this temple and use google map as your navigator.
TANAH LOT TEMPLE ON HIGH TIDE CONDITION:
*) You really can not reach Tanah Lot when it’s on high tide. Even for the local hindus who want to pray in the ‘floating island’ temple.
HOW IS TANAH LOT TEMPLE DRESS CODE?
- PRAYING DRESS CODE:
There is a dress code for Balinese people who want to pray in holy temple. They need wearing a sarong with scarf wear on the waist. It’s a typical dress for prayer/pilgrims in whole Bali island.
*) White dress is popular dress for local when visiting a temple. But, other color is fine as long it’s clean.
- VISITOR/TRAVELER DRESS CODE:
For visitor/tourist/traveler you can bring your own sarong and scarf. Otherwise you can buy it on the shop nearby.
*) Traveler or tourist just allowed to enter the holy water area (downstairs), not holy praying area (upstairs).
THE HOLY SNAKES AT TANAH LOT CAVE
*) There is a cave which is a place of sacred black-white (zebra) snake inside. The local people believed it’s shawl from holy hindus priest that change turn into a snake. Seems it just another nice story.

*) Use Telkomsel SIM card for relative better service compare to other telecom operator.
Some restroom and toilet. Better bring your own tissue.
*) The restroom near entry gate is free. The other restroom you need to pay.
Some shops outside of temple selling foods, snacks and souvenirs.
*) There are some restaurant with nice ‘Tanah Lot’ view. You can reach it by walk up the stairs. It’s located in the northeast of Tanah Lot temple.

*) This place also has an awesome view. The location is on the west of Tanah Lot temple, still in the one area. You just need walk to the west.
WHEN YOU SHOULD NOT VISIT TANAH LOT TEMPLE?
TANAH LOT TEMPLE TIPS:
On the weekend usually it become more crowded. Some local people spend time to visit Tanah Lot temple on weekend. Don’t visit this temple if you prefer quiet atmosphere.
- INDONESIAN HOLIDAY.
On Indonesian holiday some local people from Java or other island visiting Bali. Tanah Lot temple one is one of the affected ones. It become super crowded on Indonesian holiday. Just don’t visit if you don’t like crowded situation.
- HIGH TIDE.
If your visit in the same time of high tide wave, then you can not enter or reaching Tanah Lot temple. You just can watch from far away distance. Even Hindus pilgrims also can not enter the temple for praying.

*) Well, it’s not easy to get best sunset picture here. I need four time visits to get a good picture. If you got best sunset picture at first visit, it mean you’re so lucky.
PROS AND CONS:
- Beautiful and unique location of temple.
- Sacred and popular Hindus temple.
- Fresh sea air and beautiful garden.
- Sunset spot.
- Cheap Balinese dance show.
- Touristic place or crowded on weekend and tourist season.
- No public transport to here.
- No informative/educational signs.
- Some visitor said it’s overrated price for visit a temple.
- Many little shops on outside with the same stuff/souvenirs.
UPDATE STATUS OF TANAH LOT TEMPLE:
OPEN FOR ANY VISITOR/TOURIST/PILGRIMS
*) Since March 22nd, 2020 Tanah Lot temple has been closed according to government instruction to avoid Corona spreads.
**) Since July 20th, 2020 Tanah Lot temple has been opened with applied New Normal protocol.
