Nyepi day is a Balinese “Day of Silence” that is celebrated every Saka new year according to the Balinese calendar (in 2017, it falls on March 28). It is a big and main day for Hindu. It’s a day of silence, fasting and meditation for the Balinese. Nyepi day, also known as public holiday in Indonesia,
Start from 6 a.m. until 6 a.m in the next morning, Nyepi day is a day reserved for self-reflection. Everything that could interfere with that purpose is forbidden. The four main forbidden are no lighting or fires (and lights must be kept low); no working/studying; no entertainment or pleasure; no traveling; and, for some, no talking and fasting. The effect of these restrictions is roads and streets are empty. Bus station, airport, ferry dock are closed. There is little or even no noise from TV and radio, and few signs of activity are seen even inside homes. The only people to be seen out houses are the Pecalang, traditional security men who patrol the streets to make sure the prohibitions are being obeyed and the ambulance car who have right access the road.
Nyepi day is mainly a Hindu holiday, non-Hindu residents and tourists are not free from the restrictions. Although they are free to do as they wish inside their hotels, no one is allowed onto the beaches or streets. This event makes Bali as special island in Indonesia. Only in here you can feel the truly ‘Day of Silent’.

March 28th, 2017.
No fire or lights,
*) In the western culture they celebrate new year with fireworks, singing and fun. Here in Bali, they meditating and self-reflection. So, they will have clear mind to make resolution for the next year.
**) In the morning you will hear the voice of the birds, rooster and dogs only. In the night it’s totally dark because no light et all in the houses. I surprised so many stars in the night sky. I agree Nyepi night sky is the best night sky to watch the stars because no lights, smoke, etc.
WHERE IS IT?
All the places in Bali island.
WATCH THE NYEPI DAY atmosphere FROM VIDEO:
*) It just like an empty city, i recommend you don’t traveling in Bali on Nyepi day. Otherwise, you will stuck and starving. It’s forbidden for you to access the road. Otherwise, the Pecalang (village security) will took you. If you are lucky, they will provide you a food.
