WHAT IS LE MAYEUR MUSEUM?

DESCRIPTION:

Le Mayeur Museum was officially opened in August 28th,1957 and it became a museum after a visit of Indonesian education & cultural ministry in one year before. The Le Mayeur museum has a great selection of artworks from the Belgian artists, Adrian Jean Le Mayeur de Merpres who had lived in Bali and inspired by the natural beauty, life and culture of Bali.

The total of paintings collection are 88 pieces. It categorized into five different collections based on the mediums that Le Mayeur used, such as hardboard, plywood, canvas and paper. His technique was unorthodox, a brilliant way created a range of artworks in his impressionistic  style of painting. Le Mayeur use thick brushes rather than stiff brushes to create sharp yet fluent caresses. All his paintings showing the Bali’s natural beauty, the Bali’s culture and his fascinating Balinese wife, Ni Nyoman Pollok. The visit the Le Mayeur Museum gain a better understanding and appreciation of Bali beauty, culture and Le Mayeur’s love life.

*) I surprised because he used many kind painting medium beside canvas. Even some of them are unusual medium such hardboard, grass mat, etc.

There is no direct public transport to get there. You have to take multiple public transport to reach this place.

From UBUD :
Please take a Mini/Micro Bus (Bemo) at Ubud – Then, stop at Batubulan Mini/Micro Bus Station.
please take Trans  SARBAGITA Bus Corridor 2 – Stop in the Matahari Terbit 1 Shelter/Halte.

  • Fee: IDR 20K + IDR 3,500.

From UBUD (Other option):
Please take a Trans Metro Dewata bus corridor 4 at Puri Dalem Puri Peliatan – Then, stop at Ubung Mini/Micro Bus Station.

*) It’s really not efficient trip using public transport in Bali. Waste your time and energy.

**) For backpacker i recommend you to rent a scooter to reach this place and use google map as your navigator.

***) You can also use Go-jek or Grab transport. Their price reasonable, but you have to install the apps first and the driver may not be able to speak English.

*) The museum that managed by local government always looks pitiful compare to a private museum. The air circulation system seems not so good. I feel so hot and humid inside of the gallery. But, it was a nice stop to enjoy Le Mayeur’s paintings. I can see Bali’s daily life in the past time and his journey and love of his life through his painting collection.

PROS AND CONS:

1. Awesome paintings collection.
2. Stunning paintings from Belgian artist.
3. Impressionist paintings.
4. Balinese daily life in paintings.
5. Le Mayeur’s journey in his paintings collection.

CONS:
1. Crowded on tourist season/weekend/Indonesian holiday.
2. Some visitor said it’s expensive entrance fee.
3. No museum tour guide.
4. Dirty and poor maintenance.
5. No Aircon (AC) to preserve paintings collection.

UPDATE STATUS OF LE MAYEUR MUSEUM:

OPEN FOR ANY VISITOR/TOURIST

*) Since March 21st, 2020 Le Mayeur museum has been closed according to government instruction to avoid Corona spreads.

**) Since July 9th, 2020 (Bali New Normal) period, Le Mayeur museum has been officially open for visitor.
