WHAT IS GUNUNG KAWI SEBATU TEMPLE?
Gunung Kawi Sebatu temple (Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu) is a beautiful garden and water temple which located in the deep steep forested slope in Gianyar, Bali. It’s established on the natural spring and supplied some pools around the temple.
Gunung Kawi Sebatu temple surrounded by forested hills, that’s why it’s so peaceful. The asphalt road to the temple is a little bit steep, but the condition is very good. This temple surrounded by high tropical trees. It’s shading the area.
Once a year, the temple has a festival. Many hindus from all over Bali island came here doing the ceremony and praying. It’s anniversary of the temple. Local people called it “Purnama Sasih Kasa” festival.

HOW TO GET TO GUNUNG KAWI SEBATU TEMPLE?
There is no public transport to get there.
*) For backpacker i recommend you to rent a scooter to reach this temple and use google maps as your navigator.
**) Make sure your scooter is in good condition. The asphalt road to the temple is a little bit steep, but the condition is very good.
THE HOLY NATURAL SPRING
*) This holy pond is the location of the water source. It’s forbidden to anybody to enter this pond.
HOW IS PURA GUNUNG KAWI SEBATU TEMPLE DRESS CODE?
- PRAYING DRESS CODE:
There is a special dress code for Balinese people who want to pray in holy temple. They need wearing a sarong with scarf wear on the waist. It’s a typical dress for prayer/pilgrims in whole Bali island.
*) White dress is popular dress for local when visiting a temple. But, other color is fine as long it’s clean.
- VISITOR/TRAVELER DRESS CODE:
For visitor/tourist/traveler you can bring your own sarong and scarf. Otherwise you can rent sarong and scarf for free at ticket window. So, you don’t need to buy it.
*) Gunung Kawi Sebatu temple lend you colorful sarong and orange/yellow/red scarf for free.
**) This ‘Sarong’ can not use for bathing in the water temple. You need to buy a special dress for bathing or you can bring your own sarong textile for bathing.
- “MELUKAT” BATHING DRESS CODE:
For visitor/tourist/traveler you can bring your own sarong for bathing. Otherwise you can buy in shops located in front of the temple.
*) There is no special color for bathing dress. You can wear any color as long it’s polite dress and not swimsuit.
- SWIMMING DRESS CODE:
Swimming pool and bathing pond are two different places. They positioned in different location. You can bring & wear your own swimming suit in the swimming pool only. Swimming pool for men and women are separated.
*) Please don’t change the dress/clothes in the open space or holy area. You should realize this a temple, not swimming pool. You need to change the dress in the special place.
THE PONDS FOR CLEANING KARMA
*) This water temple not only for cleaning the bad karma. But, sometime the local people visit it to make a wish to have a baby or wishing a baby in the womb become healthy and useful person. Don’t be surprised if you see a pregnant lady with the beautiful dress with her husband visit and praying here.

*) This fishes pond is favorite place for children. They love looking and feeding the fish here.
*) You may feeding the carp fishes, the ducks and the swan, just pay IDR 5K only for their foods.
THE STATUES IN THE TEMPLE:
*) I love those statue. One looks so old and the other looks so colorful. But, those are the same character actually.
SWIMMING POOL AT GUNUNG KAWI SEBATU
*) The swimming fee is so cheap, it’s IDR 1K only. I think this price for local people who live nearby. The swimming pools separated for men and women. The water so refreshing. You should try swimming here and feel how fresh it is.
**) Better swimming on weekdays, on weekend it’s so crowded by local people.
PURA GUNUNG KAWI SEBATU TEMPLE
*) It was great lost actually because i’m looking Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring temple, not Gunung Kawi Sebatu temple. But, seems it’s my destiny arrived in this beautiful place. It’s really peaceful place surrounded by many tree, beautiful gardens and pools. This place is suitable for you to chilling out with the fresh air and water. Especially if you visit on weekdays. It’s really spiritual retreat place. It can refresh your mind.
PROS AND CONS:
- Quiet, clean and peaceful atmosphere.
- A few tourist.
- Beautiful garden and fresh water.
- Huge fishes pond (children friendly).
- Relaxing and positive vibe place.
- No public transport to here.
- Many little shops on outside with the same stuff/souvenirs.
- It looks like other Balinese water temple.
- Some visitor says it’s overrated price for a small temple.
UPDATE STATUS OF GUNUNG KAWI SEBATU TEMPLE TODAY:
OPEN FOR ANY VISITOR/TOURIST/PILGRIMS
*) Since March 22nd, 2020 Gunung Kawi Sebatu temple has been closed according to government command to avoid Corona spreads.
**) Since July 9th, 2020 Gunung Kawi Sebatu temple has been opened with applied New Normal protocol.
