WHAT IS GUNUNG KAWI TAMPAKSIRING TEMPLE?
Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring temple is a complex temple which located in the near Pakerisan river in Tampaksiring, Gianyar, Bali. It was established on the natural rock hill.
Gunung Kawi consist of two words, Gunung and Kawi. Gunung means mountain. Kawi means carving. So, Gunung Kawi means carved mountain. It was found by a dutch, H.T. Damste on 1920.
It was established in 11th century as written in the stone inscription in Gunung Kawi, Tampaksiring. The founder was King Anak Wungsu, the son of King Udayana. It was for funeral monument, praying and meditation place.

*) There are two temples who has the same “Gunung Kawi” name. Here is Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring temple. The other is Gunung Kawi Sebatu temple. Both place are nice temple and near to each other. Make sure you visit the correct temple.

HOW TO GET TO GUNUNG KAWI TAMPAKSIRING TEMPLE?
There is no public transport to get there.
*) For backpacker i recommend you to rent a scooter to reach this temple and use google maps as your navigator.

*) Before arrive on the temple you will step down hundreds of stairs.

*) A new temple was build near the site and used for hindus praying.

*) You need to hike to find this temple.
HOW IS GUNUNG KAWI TAMPAKSIRING TEMPLE DRESS CODE?
- PRAYING DRESS CODE:
There is a special dress code for Balinese people who want to pray in holy temple. They need wearing a sarong with scarf wear on the waist. It’s a typical dress for prayer/pilgrims in whole Bali island.
*) White dress is popular dress for local when visiting a temple. But, other color is fine as long it’s clean.
- VISITOR/TRAVELER DRESS CODE:
For visitor/tourist/traveler you can bring your own sarong and scarf. Otherwise you can rent sarong and scarf for free at ticket window. So, you don’t need to buy it.
*) Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring temple lend you colorful sarong and orange/yellow/red/pink scarf for free.
**) If you wore long pant or long dress, you don’t need to wear sarong. Just wear free scarf on the waist.

*) A room for meditation. Cold, quiet and dark. But, it has good air circulation and exotic smell from incense.

*) Use Telkomsel SIM card for relative better service compare to other telecom operator.

*) Better bring your own tissue.
Some shop selling snacks and souvenirs.
*) Since the temples made from limestone, it will easy broken/damaged by dripping or flow water. I think government archaeological & conservation board should concern about this issue. Sterilize the upside area from the water maybe is a wise step. Otherwise, this heritage will be damaged.

*) I love Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring temple because it’s not so touristic place (relative not much visitor). The atmosphere also still natural and awesome. Even you can enjoy the rice terrace view and the plantation after you enjoyed the carved limestone wall.
PROS AND CONS:
- Quiet temple in Bali.
- A heritage temple.
- Awesome rice terraces.
- A carved wall temple.
- No public transport to here.
- Many little shops on outside with the same stuff/souvenirs.
- Some visitor says it’s overrated price for visit a temple.
- Too much stairs on the way, not suitable for elderly visitor & knee problem.

OPEN FOR ANY VISITOR/TOURIST/PILGRIMS
*) Since March 22nd, 2020 Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring temple has been closed according to government instruction to avoid Corona spreads.
**) Since July 9th, 2020 Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring temple has been opened with applied New Normal protocol.
